Heritage Week in Sligo – A Great Success
Heritage Week is a unique opportunity for local communities to host a vibrant celebration of the wonderful natural, built and cultural heritage of our county. Each year Heritage Week is an opportunity to build awareness and enjoyment of our heritage thereby encouraging its conservation and preservation. The themes for Heritage Week 2022 were sustainability and biodiversity, with many events reflecting these throughout the week.

A special thank you to all the groups, individuals and communities who took part in hosting events and who made Heritage Week 2022 amazing! Their creativity, collaboration and dedication make National Heritage Week what it is! Without their interest, hard work and voluntary commitment Heritage Week would not be possible.
Thanks also to all those who attended events throughout the week, your support was crucial and greatly appreciated by all the organisers. It was fantastic to gather once again in celebration of our national heritage. We hope that you enjoyed all the events and look forward to doing it all again next year!
National Heritage Week Awards 2022
The Heritage Council has announced details of this year’s National Heritage Week Awards, inviting nominations from event organisers across Ireland.
This approach marks a change from the last two years, when all organisers were automatically entered into the running for an award, a move facilitated by the digital-only approach to National Heritage Week that was brought about by the pandemic. This year, however, following the full return of in-person events, digital project and in-person event organisers must put themselves forward for consideration for an award. Nominations for the National Heritage Awards will close on Monday, 5th September at 5pm. A nomination form is available on www.heritageweek.ie.
Councillor Donal Gilroy, Chairperson of Sligo Heritage Forum added:
National Heritage Week Awards offer a chance to celebrate those who work – often voluntarily and always tirelessly – to ensure its preservation and protection. I would urge National Heritage Week organisers to own and recognise their dedication and accomplishments in this regard and that they must nominate themselves or their organisations for an award and I would strongly urge them to do so.
This year, there will be six award categories, together with the County Awards. Reflecting the theme of National Heritage Week this year, projects will be considered on the basis of their fulfilment of the criteria established for this year’s initiative, with a particular emphasis on sustainable heritage and biodiversity.
This year’s National Heritage Week Awards will comprise the county awards, as well as a number of special categories, namely:
- National Heritage Hero Award
- Sustainable Heritage Award
- Biodiversity Award
- Wild Child Award
- Water Heritage Award
- Sustainable and Inclusive Event Award
- County Award
