About Water Services

The Sligo Local Authorities are responsible for the management of eight water treatment plants and thirty wastewater treatment plants throughout the county. This work involves the maintenance of 1,200 kilometres of water supply pipelines and the daily supply of 8.5 million
gallons of drinking water to the required EU standard.

Many schemes will be progressed or completed under the 2006 Water Services Investment Programme, including the Non-Domestic Water metering Project, the Kilsellagh Dam Modification project and the Sligo Main Drainage Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Sligo County Council also has a very active Rural Water programme. Work is in progress to provide treatment plants for a number of schemes throughout the county.

The new treatment plants are being delivered under Design Build Operate (DBO) contracts, and the work is due to be completed in the current year. The Operation/Maintenance of the plants will have a twenty year contract.

This programme of works will ensure the new schemes will provide a water supply that meets the required EU standard.
