The Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council Councillor Seamus Kilgannon hosted a reception in County Hall to honour Tubbercuury Community Games Girls team who won national honours in 2016 and 2017.

In his address the Cathaoirleach said
‘For a team of players so young, you showed skill, determination and a maturity that spoke volumes for you as athletes, and also for the passion and enthusiasm of your dedicated coaches - you certainly reaped the rewards of this endeavour, winning three Community Games National Titles in the last two years, a major achievement by any measure.’
National Titles
In 2016, you were winners you won the national seven – aside National outdoor soccer finals in Athlone. This year, the team went on to win two more National titles, winning the Futsal title in May and the indoor soccer competition in August.
We recently hosted the Closing Ceremony for our Year as ‘European Capital of Volunteering’, and if there was one theme that will be the abiding image of this year, it is the way that our volunteers all over county Sligo have enriched their communities.
Volunteerism
Probably the organisation most closely associated with volunteerism is our Community Games; This national backdrop formed the context for your wonderful adventure, and the instilled memories that will stay with you for the rest of your lives.
In honouring our volunteers, we cherish in particular those special people who made a major contribution to their community, and this evening we recall and celebrate the memory of Mairead Davey, who was a kind and generous mentor to these young athletes, and an inspirational presence to the many people she befriended in the Community Games movement.
Legacy
Mairead exemplified what Community Games and volunteerism is all about, and we honour her contribution and cherish her wonderful legacy among the young people she guided to national success. While you have had remarkable success in recent years, you are only starting out on your sporting careers, but what a marvellous foundation you have laid.
Your achievements are a great source of pride to your families, coaches and teachers, and a source of joy to your local community, and instil wonder into other young children in the area who aspire to follow in your foot-steps some day.’
The Cathaoirleach concluded his address by telling the young champions ‘Each and every one of you should be very proud of your achievements, and I wish you every success wherever this exciting journey takes you.’
