Chair of Sligo County Council’s Joint Policing Committee Councillor Rosaleen O’Grady has commended the many people involved in formulating the Committee’s Work Plan for 2017 and adopting a five year Strategic Plan at their recent meeting in Enniscrone.

Strategic Plan
A draft of the Strategic Plan 2017-2022, was placed on public display for a period of 3 weeks from 10th January, 2017 to 1st February, 2017. Notice was published in the local media and the Draft plan was also circulated to the 391 groups/organisations registered with the Sligo Public Participation Network (PPN). Submissions were invited from interested parties in relation to the draft Strategic Plan.
The mission of Sligo Joint Policing Committee is:
“to enhance the crime prevention and public safety work of an Garda Síochána, Community Groups, and Sligo County Council by adopting a collaborative approach.”
The JPC will over-see the implementation and delivery of the strategic objectives and a progress report will be prepared on an annual basis. Under each objective key actions have been identified and have been assigned to a lead agency, a number of objectives will be delivered in a collaborative partnership approach by a number of the stakeholders in a number of priority areas:
- Crime Prevention
- Community Policing
- Road Safety
- Public Safety
- Communication and Promotion of JPC
Work Plan
The work programme for 2017 agreed at the meeting of the Joint Policing Committee meeting identifies a number of priorities in the areas of crime prevention, community policing, road safety and public safety.
Among the actions put forward for delivery in the current year were an audit of the current status of CCTV in Sligo town and to explore funding opportunities for communities wishing to access CCTV. It was also agreed to highlight key precautions that should e taken by homeowners to prevent crime, and to liaise with the North West Regional Drug and Alcohol Task Force to address alcohol and substance related harm and crime.
It was noted at the JPC meeting that the implementation of the various actions was dependent on the necessary resources being made available.
Background Information
Sligo Joint Policing Committee was established on the 2nd November, 2015 to serve as a forum to discuss matters affecting the policing of Sligo County Council’s administrative area. The JPC offers local authority representatives, an Garda Síochána, members of the Oireachtas and the public, an opportunity to work in partnership to improve the quality of life for the citizens of the county.
