The Cathaoirleach attended the launch of the 2017 ‘Darkness into Light’ Walk, which will take place on Saturday morning 6th May.

Cathaoirleach Supports ‘Darkness into Light’ Launch

The Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council Councillor Hubert Keaney said
"The annual ‘Darkness into Light’ walk has become so established in our community that it is hard to believe the national organisation was founded only twelve years ago by Joan Freeman, and from modest beginnings evolved the unique fund-raising venture."
In his address the Cathaoirleach said
"In her work as CEO of Pieta House, Joan realised that suicide was a topic that was rarely discussed and poorly understood. In the years since the organisation was founded, you have dramatically increased public awareness about suicide. You have also energised the Irish community to work with you on your aim of having a centre within 100km of every person in Ireland. "
The sobering backdrop to this event is that Ireland ranks 4th in the world for suicide rates among young men between the ages of 18 and 24. While this is a hugely complex and sensitive issue, we should avail of every opportunity to reach out to vulnerable or distressed young people in particular to re-assure them that they are not alone.
I think the symbolism of the walk is hugely significant, as people transcend from the darkness of despair into the light of a welcoming hope. By taking part in the walk, the community shows solidarity and support, to remove the sense of isolation and loneliness that affect any person or household.
The Sligo ‘Walk’ has been especially successful, and it has certainly captured the public interest and imagination. This year Sligo is celebrating its status as ‘European Capital of Volunteering’, and the many exemplary volunteers who work with Pieta House are an inspiration to the wider community. ‘Darkness into Light’ delivers a message of hope, and through your efforts you have touched the lives of countless people in every area of the country.’
