The Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council Councillor Seamus Kilgannon has welcomed today’s announcement by Irish Water that over €16 million will be invested in County Sligo’s Wastewater infrastructure.

Council Welcomes Major Investment in Wastewater Infrastructure
In a partnership with Sligo County Council, four waste water treatment plants will be upgraded: Grange, Strandhill, Tubbercurry and Ballinafad.
The Cathaoirleach said
'Confirmation of this major investment is very welcome news for this Council and the people in these communities. The upgrade of the four plants has been discussed many times in the Council Chamber. The works are expected to commence early next year, and in addition to bringing improved water quality, it will also enhance our environment and development potential. It will also impact on the water quality of nearby coastal areas.
The Cathaoirleach also commended Sligo County Council’s Director of Services Tom Kilfeather and his team for coordinating the projects to date and preparing the submission to Irish Water.
Councillor Jerry Lundy, Chair of Ballymote-Tobercurry Municipal District and Chair of Sligo County Councils Environment and Infrastructure Strategic Policy Committee, has warmly welcomed the announcement by Irish Water.
Councillor Lundy said
“These Schemes have been long awaited by the four communities concerned. They will bring improved water quality and enhance our environment and development potential in these areas from an environmental point of view the upgrade of the plant at Tubbercurry is particularly welcome. These works will also ensure that wastewater is treated and discharged in compliance with the Urban Wastewater Treatment Regulations 2001, and conditions set in Wastewater Discharge Licence (WWDL) issued by the Environmental Protection Agency. It will also improve the water quality of nearby coastal areas, protecting bathing areas and the aquatic environment from pollution.’
Councillor Lundy added that he welcomed the news that the Contractors will commence construction works at all four sites early in 2018.
