Councillor Jerry Lundy was unanimously elected Chair of the Ballymote-Tobercurry Municipal District at its Annual General meeting, which was held in Teach Laighne, Tubbercurry on Monday 19th June. Councillor Dara Mulvey was elected Vice-Chair.

Councillor Lundy said it was ‘A great honour to accept the position of Chair’ and said he looked forward to working with his colleagues to promote and develop South Sligo. ‘The most critical issue we face is jobs, only by creating the conditions to facilitate sustainable jobs will we keep young people in this region. With a western Minister for Rural Affairs, it would make good sense to de-centralise some of this Department’s jobs to rural Ireland. Brexit is a major challenge facing us at a county, regional and national basis, but I also believe this process will present opportunities that we have to be ready to exploit. ‘

Chief Executive Ciarán Hayes congratulated Councillor Lundy on behalf of the staff, and concurred with his opinion that Brexit poses an unprecedented challenge to the Border counties in particular.
