Sligo Civil Defence comprises of 80 active volunteers fully equipped and trained available at short notice to assist where needed. There is no special training required by an individual interested in joining Civil Defence Training is given throughout the year to all volunteers. You must be 18 years and under 65 in order to join Civil Defence. Some of the work carried out by Civil Defence can be strenuous and under extreme conditions. When the organisation is called upon to assist it can mean that you are out in all kinds of weather but the satisfaction of assisting at the end of the day far outweighs the unpleasantness of the weather.

There are six centres spread throughout the county so there may be one near you. There are many branches within the organisation that you can choose from to become involved in namely: first aid, welfare, communications, search and recovery in heights, land, bulding, and shore line. All volunteers must train in basic first aid life saving skills. There are opportunities to go forward to train as an instructor in the specialist field of your preference.
