Aim to eliminate all single use plastics at Sligo Co Co by end 2019

Last Thursday at Sligo County Council headquarters at Riverside, a campaign was launched which aims to promote the Council’s Green Aware Sligo campaign by replacing single use plastics with keep cups.

Council staff and members of Sligo County Council assembled in the canteen during the morning break to hear of plans to eliminate the use of single use plastics in all Council buildings throughout the county, as well as taking other simple steps such as the removal of butter and jam sachets, the use of glass receptacles instead of plastic, and the purchase of extra plates, cups and cutlery instead of their plastic equivalents.

"It’s important for the Council to provide leadership on improving our environmental awareness and while this is just one example of simple steps any business could take, it’s important that we show that all measures matter. All of us, staff here at the Council, as well as members of the public, have a role to play in the reduction of our carbon emissions."

Chief Executive of Sligo County Council Ciarán Hayes

"We want Council employees to take small but significant steps towards being more responsible in relation to the environment,” she added. “This is just the first measure, and we aim to have eliminated the use of single use plastics by the end of the year. Staff members and visitors won’t be able to use plastic bottles of water in the canteen, for example, and plastic cups will be removed from water dispensers also."
