Sligo County Council submitted a funding application under the Carbon Tax Fund 2020 for the Charlestown / Bellaghy to Collooney Greenway Project.

Minister Eamonn Ryan, T.D. Minister for Climate Change, Communications Networks and Transport, has announced allocations under this fund totalling €4.5m to support feasibility, planning and design work for 26 Greenway Projects countrywide.

This funding announced includes €800,000 for Greenway projects benefitting Sligo. A provisional allocation of €300,000 has been secured by Sligo County Council towards preliminary design and environmental evaluation costs for the Charlestown / Bellaghy to Collooney Greenway Project. Leitrim County Council has also been provisionally awarded €500,000 for the Sligo Leitrim Northern Counties Railway (SLNCR) Greenway project from Sligo to Blacklion, which will enable that project to be brought through the required statutory process.

Sligo County Council Cathaoirleach Councillor Dara Mulvey warmly welcomed the funding allocations, stating that the proposed greenways would provide scenic and safe walking and cycling facilities which will be of major benefit to the local economy and the wider North West region.
