On February 10, Sligo passed the final stage of certification for the first town in Ireland to receive ‘Coach Friendly Destination' status awarded by the Coach Tourism Transport Council of Ireland (CTTC).

Mayor Marie Casserley welcomed the CEO of CTTC, Kevin Traynor  to City Hall and was delighted to accept the award on behalf of Sligo County Council and Sligo BID. The work completed over the two years includes new footpaths, lighting, maps and signage on Markievicz Rd – the designated drop off area for coaches.

At the new coach park, space is available for nine coaches and improvements include new lighting, signage and the installation of CCTV which will allow drivers to view their coach from their phone.

Sligo County Council and Sligo BID are currently developing new driver maps and a voucher based system offering complimentary lunch to drivers and guides

The reaction from the coach sector has being most positive and the CEO of CTTC, Kevin Traynor said ‘It is clear to me that Sligo have worked together to improve service provision to this important market segment. Sligo is now an example of what can be achieved with a commitment to work together to get results. I am delighted to have had the opportunity to visit here and present this award.’

This initiative was supported by Sligo Tourism, Sligo Chamber and Failte Ireland.
