Minister English Briefed on Sligo Housing Programme

The Minister of State at the Department of Housing, Planning and local Government, Damien English, visited Sligo on Friday and was welcomed to County Hall by the Cathaoirleach Councillor Martin Baker.

The Minister attended a briefing on Sligo County Council’s Housing Capital programme, and discussed current and planned developments with the Chief Executive Ciarán Hayes and the Housing staff.  They considered the opportunities and challenges presented in delivering social and private housing, with a total of 266 ‘builds’ planned in the current housing programme.

The Minister was also updated on Cranmore Regeneration, which will see a major programme of building and environmental works being delivered over the coming years.  The project includes refurbishment of houses, the provision of quality spaces for community facilities, including a community centre, sports pitch and play areas.

Knappagh Road

The Minister ‘turned the sod’ on the Knappagh Road Housing Scheme, which will see 28 housing units delivered by early 2020.  The scheme will provide a mix of housing types (16 two bedroom units, 6 one bedroom units and 6 three bedroom units) to cater for a wide range of housing needs.

Fr O Flanagan

The Minister joined the Cathaoirleach to formally open the 22 unit Fr O’ Flanagan Terrace scheme.  He met with local residents and commended the Housing staff and other members of the project team for the quality of the development.

Since 2016, Sligo County Council has built 24 homes, acquired a further 69 dwellings and are leasing 17 for use as public housing. In the current year, 15 houses have been built.  By year end contractors will be on site constructing a further 66 housing units – 8 in Ballymote, 15 in Collooney and 43 over three different sites in Sligo.
