The official naming ceremony for Sligo’s ‘Bridge of Light’ was conducted Saturday afternoon an initiative coordinated by Sligo County Council, Northwest Hospice and Comhaltas.

In his address, the Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council, Councillor Hubert Keaney, said

"The North West Hospice enjoys a special place in our community, the kindness and professionalism of the Hospice staff has been a gift to families all over this region. The naming of this bridge in the heart of Sligo is a fitting honour for the many people who work there, or whose lives have been touched and enhanced by their grace and generosity. One of our objectives in arranging this ceremony is to increase the awareness and profile of our local hospice and to encourage people to support them in their outstanding work. This ceremony is also a celebration, and I can think of no more vibrant and enjoyable setting than in the midst of our County Fleadh. I want to thank our colleagues in Comhaltas for working with us at every stage of this initiative and for integrating the ceremony into their programme for today. The aptly – named ‘Bridge of Light’ offers a beacon of hope and inspiration, and the many people who cross it each day will be prompted to reflect on an institution that enjoys enormous goodwill and support in our community.
