Easkey Hurling Team Honoured

Easkey Hurling Team Honoured

The Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council Councillor Michael Clarke hosted a Reception in County Hall for the Easkey Hurling Team to honour their recent success on reaching the AIB GAA Hurling All-Ireland Junior Club Championship final.

In addition to the Cathaoirleach, the audience was addressed by Easkey Club Chairman Michael Conway.

Success

The Cathaoirleach said ‘Sometimes there is an achievement in the world of sport that resonates well beyond the county boundary and attracts the attention and plaudits of the national media.

The success of Easkey hurling club falls into that category.

This was a success supported and driven by the whole Easkey Community, they followed your progress with interest and celebrated your victories with pride.

Support

A Newspaper article last year highlighted the role of a group they called ‘The Three Wise Men’ of Easkey hurling – Michael Gordon, Tom Evans and Padraig Hallinan.  Their proven ability is matched by their modesty, and they would be the first to acknowledge the support they received from the local community.

There are countless others who made a huge contribution, trainer Brian Healy, Frances, Ita, Jo Anne and their helpers, sponsors Eamonn O’Dowd, Bernard O’Brien, The Castle Inn – they all played their part with their generous support.

Progression

In hindsight, this wonderful campaign to win their third Senior Hurling Championship in a row, and going on to be crowned Connacht Champions, should have come as no surprise.  The foundations had been set by the remarkable work being carried out in recent years at under age level, with a roll of honour including titles at U-14, U-16 and six Sligo minor championships from 2015 to 2020.

All the ingredients came together perfectly for progression to the next level – a passionate and skilful group of players, mentored and driven by a talented and ambitious coaching team.

Inspiration

The lessons you learned, the obstacles you overcame, you can display these as a badge of honour to be celebrated.

Your story will also inspire the next generation of young hurlers and footballers who share your ambition and hope to replicate your success.

You have set a very high standard, but it speaks volumes for your character that you see this campaign, not as the end of a wonderful journey, but a steppingstone to further glories ahead.
