1 - Economic Development and Planning Policy

Minutes of Strategic Policy Committee 1 (Economic Development and Planning Policy) of Sligo County Council held at 3.00 pm on 15th September, 2010 in the Members Room, County Hall, Riverside, Sligo.


MEMBERS PRESENT:

CHAIRPERSON:

In light of the absence of the Chairperson it was proposed by Councillor Healy McGowan and seconded by Councillor Collery that Councillor Lyons would take the Chair.

1. Confirmation of minutes of Strategic Policy Committee meeting held on 12th March 2009. 

It was proposed by Mr. Gerard Queenan and seconded by Councillor Thomas Collery  and agreed:  “That the minutes of the Strategic Policy Committee No. 1 meeting held on 19th May 2010  be confirmed”.

Councillor Mc Garry took the Chair at this point.

2. To consider Work Programme for the Strategic Policy Committee during 2010/11.

Following a wide ranging discussion it was agreed that the following matters would be further examined:-

  • Implications of the new Planning Legislation which has recently been enacted.
  • Consider impact on economic development of infrastructural deficit.
  • Develop policies in relation to alternative sources of energy.
  • Develop policies to assist in job creation through increased economic development.
  • Consider the planning policy on siting of masts – with a view to facilitating the rollout of broadband.  – It was agreed that this item would be dealt with at the November Meeting of the SPC.

3. Update in relation to review of Sligo County Development Plan 2011 – 2017

Mr. Frank Moylan, Acting Senior Planner gave an update on the progress in respect of the review of the Sligo County Development Plan which is currently underway.

4. Update on the review of the Sligo County Development Board Action Plan.

Ms Aisling Smith outlined the background to the establishment of the County Development Board (CDB) and gave details of current activities undertaken by the CDB.  

5. Report on Sligo Harbour. 

Ms Paula R Gallagher, Acting Director of Services gave an update on harbour activities.  With regard to the Sligo Docklands Local Area Plan which is being prepared the members requested that this report be brought before the SPC before being submitted to the full Council meeting.

6. To consider Draft County Place Names policy.

It was proposed by Councillor Deirdre Healy Mc Gowan and seconded by Councillor Rosaleen O'Grady that the Draft County Place Names Policy was agreed and should be submitted to the Council for approval. It was also proposed and agreed that the policy – with appropriate adjustments – should be forwarded to Sligo Borough Council for consideration.  

7. Any other business.

The Members agreed that the next meeting would take place on 25th  November, 2010.
