Sligo County Council, in partnership with the Department of Justice, is establishing a new Local Community Safety Partnership (LCSP) in Sligo.

What Is the LCSP?

The LCSP is a new government initiative aimed at improving safety and wellbeing in communities across Ireland. It brings together:

  • Statutory services
  • Voluntary and community organisations
  • Local councillors
  • Residents and business representatives

Together, they will identify and address community safety concerns at a local level.

What Does Community Safety Mean?

Community safety is more than just policing. It’s about creating environments where people feel safe and supported. This includes:

  • Visible Garda presence
  • Safe spaces for children and young people
  • Support services for vulnerable groups
  • Collaborative responses to local issues

A multi-agency approach ensures that services work together to meet the unique needs of each community.

How Will It Work in Sligo?

The LCSP will replace the existing Joint Policing Committees and serve as a central forum for discussing and deciding on community safety priorities.

Key features include:

  • Up to 30 members, including representatives from public services, Sligo County Council, elected councillors, and community groups
  • Public consultation to identify local priorities
  • Development of a Local Community Safety Plan
  • Members will attend at least six meetings per year
  • Participation in working groups to implement strategies

Who’s Involved?

The LCSP will bring together:

  • Local residents and community leaders
  • Voluntary and minority groups
  • Business interests
  • An Garda Síochána, Tusla, the HSE, and other State services

The Partnership will be led by an independent chairperson and supported by a dedicated Community Safety Coordinator.
