Minutes of Annual General Meeting of The Borough District of Sligo held on Monday 26th June 2023 at 10.00 a.m. in The Council Chamber, City Hall, Quay Street, Sligo

MAYOR:
Before the meeting got underway, The Mayor, Councillor Tom Mac Sharry thanked Council Staff for their support during his term of office, in particular Kevin Colreavy & Geraldine Flanagan in Corporate Services and David Mc Loughlin & Brenda Cullen in City Hall. The Mayor in his address mentioned some of the highlights of his term of office such as the introduction of the free parking at Christmas initiative, unveiling of the headstone for PA Mc Hugh and the continued rollout of local link bus services in the town.
Councillor O’Grady in her comments said that Councillor Mac Sharry had excellently represented the Municipal District but hoped that the incoming Mayor would continue to fight for the restoration of the Borough Council. This sentiment was shared by the other members.
1. ELECTION OF MAYOR:
It was then:
Proposed by Councillor G O’Boyle
Seconded by Councillor R O’Grady
AND AGREED
“That Councillor Declan Bree be elected as Mayor of the Borough District of Sligo”.
Councillor O’Boyle in proposing Councillor Bree said he has been a lifelong championing voice for social justice with an unmatched record of service locally. Councillor O’Grady in seconding the nomination said nobody was more entitled to the office and no doubt he would carry it out to perfection and with great dignity. She continued that all members depend on his wisdom and experience and who it a loyal colleague.
Councillor Bree thanked the members for placing their confidence in him, and how it is an unique honour. Councillor Bree lamented the loss of the Borough Council in 2014 and how Ireland has the weakest system of local government in Europe. Priorities for the year ahead for the Mayor would be to continue to campaign for the reopening of the Western Rail Corridor and to improve for improvements generally in Sligos connectivity. Addressing the rate of commercial rates vacancy will be another priority for the year

2. ELECTION OF DEPUTY MAYOR:
Proposed by Councillor G O’Boyle
Seconded by Councillor A Gibbons
AND AGREED
“That Councillor Sinead Mguire be elected as Deputy Mayor of the Borough District of Sligo
Councillor Maguire thanked her proposer and seconder, and assured the Mayor of her full assistance for the coming year
