Minutes of Special Meeting of Sligo County Council to Consider The Election of a Representative to the Governing Body of The National University of Ireland, Galway held on Monday, 11th January, 2021 at 9.30 a.m. in The Council Chamber, County Hall, Riverside, Sligo.

Cathaoirleach, Councillor Dara Mulvey, presided.

 

APOLOGIES:

Apologies were received from Councillor T. Healy.

 

The Meetings Administrator informed the Members that Sligo County Council was advised by the National University of Ireland, Galway that the term of office of the existing Governing Authority will expire on 31st January 2021.

The term of office for the incoming Authority will be four years from 1st February 2021.

Councillors were notified of this vacancy on 30th November 2019 and a Notice for the Special Meeting was published on 3rd December, as required.

Two nomination papers, signed by a proposer and seconder, were submitted by the closing date of 18th December:

  • Councillor Declan Bree, proposed by Councillor Gino O’Boyle and seconded by Councillor Arthur Gibbons and
  • Councillor Sinéad Maguire, proposed by Councillor Thomas Walsh and seconded by Councillor Dara Mulvey.

The Cathaoirleach indicated that, as there were two nominations, he would now ask the Meetings Administrator to record a vote on the matter.

This vote resulted as follows:

FOR COUNCILLOR BREE:  Councillor Baker, Councillor Bree, Councillor Gibbons, Councillor Gilroy, Councillor MacSharry, Councillor O’Boyle and Councillor O’Grady (7)

FOR COUNCILLOR MAGUIRE:  Councillor Casserly, Councillor Clarke, Councillor Connolly, Councillor Fox, Councillor Maguire, Councillor Mullaney, Councillor Mulvey, Councillor Queenan, Councillor Taylor and Councillor Walsh (10)

ABSENT:  Councillor Healy (1)

The Cathaoirleach deemed Councillor Maguire elected as Sligo County Council’s Representative on the incoming Board of the National University of Ireland, Galway.

Councillor Bree extended his congratulations to Councillor Maguire and thanked the Members who had supported him in the vote.

Councillor Maguire said that, as a Graduate of N.U.I.G., she had sought this nomination since she had joined Sligo County Council.  She was delighted to have been nominated and assured the Members that she would give the role her all.
