Minutes of the Annual Meeting of Sligo County Council held on 30th June 2008 at 4.00pm in the Council Chamber, County Hall, Riverside, Sligo.

CATHAOIRLEACH: 

The Cathaoirleach, Councillor S. Kilgannon presided.

Councillor S. Kilgannon thanked the Members, County Manager and Staff for their support and encouragement during his term as Cathaoirleach.  He thanked the Meetings Administrator, Communication Staff and Press for their help and co-operation throughout the year.

He referred to a number of highlights during the year including the hosting of stages of the world rally, the launch of the Aer Arann Sligo to Manchester Service and hosting of numerous receptions in County Hall.

The members complimented Cllr S. Kilgannon on the way he performed his duties during his term of office.

Mr H. Kearns, County Manager on behalf of the Management and Staff of the Council thanked the outgoing Cathaoirleach for his dedication and commitment during his term of office and wished him well.


ELECTION OF CATHAOIRLEACH: 

Proposed by Cllr P. Conmy
Seconded by Cllr T. McLoughlin

"That Councillor G. Mullaney be our nomination for the position of Cathaoirleach".

Proposed by Cllr P. Barry
Seconded by Cllr J. Queenan

“That Councillor J. Devins be our nomination for the position of the Cathaoirleach”.

As agreement could not be reached in relation to the matter the Cathaoirleach, Councillor S. Kilgannon asked that a poll be taken and that the members indicate their preference for either Councillor G. Mullaney or Councillor J. Devins.

For Mullaney: Barrett, Conmy, Fleming, Fox, Henry, Leonard, McGrath, McLoughlin, Mullaney and Murray.

For Devins: Baker, Barry, Bree, Cawley, Collleary, Devins, Gormley, Higgins, Kilgannon, Lundy, MacManus, McGarry, Queenan and Sherlock.

As the result was for 10 for Mullaney and 14 for Devins, Councillor S. Kilgannon declared Councillor J. Devins elected Cathaoirleach.

Councillor Devins took the Chair.  He thanked the members for their support and stated that he was honoured to be elected as Cathaoirleach, and looked forward to the year ahead.  He invited nominations for the position of Leas Cathaoirleach.


ELECTION OF LEAS CATHAOIRLEACH: 

Proposed by Cllr A. Higgins
Seconded by Cllr V. Cawley

"That Councillor Healy McGowan be elected as Vice Chairperson of Sligo County Council".

Proposed by Cllr G. Murray
Seconded by Cllr M. Barrett

"That Councillor Ita Fox be elected as Vice Chairperson of Sligo County Council".

As agreement could not be reached in relation to the matter the Cathaoirleach, Cllr J. Devins asked that a poll be taken and that the members indicate their preference for either Councillor Healy McGowan or Councillor Fox.

For Healy McGowan: Baker, Barry, Bree, Cawley, Colleary, Devins, Gormley, Higgins, Kilgannon, Lundy, MacManus, McGarry, Queenan and Sherlock.

For Fox: Barrett, Conmy, Fleming, Fox, Henry, Leonard, McGrath, McLoughlin, Mullaney and Murray.

As the result was 14 votes to 10 in favour of Cllr Healy McGowan she was deemed elected Leas Cathaoirleach by the Cathaoirleach Cllr J. Devins.

VOTES OF SYMPATHY; 

Proposed by Councillor T. McLoughlin
Seconded by Councillor P. Conmy

AND AGREED

“That a vote of sympathy be extended to Seamus and Mary Kerrigan on the death of their daughter, Ann Kerrigan”.

“That a vote of sympathy be extended to Norma Hamilton McGowan on the death of her mother, Adelaide”.

Seconded by Councillor J. Lundy

AND AGREED

“That a vote of sympathy be extended to Tommy Regan and Annie Killoran on the death of Bridie Regan”.

Proposed by Councillor G. Mullaney
Seconded by Councillor M. Barrett

AND AGREED

“That a vote of sympathy be extended to Seamus O’Connell on the death of his son, Francis”.


VOTES OF CONGRATULATIONS; 

“That a vote of congratulation be extended to Fr Dominic Gilhooly on his Golden Jubilee”.

“That a vote of congratulation be extended to the Sligo Ladies team on reaching the TG4 Connacht Ladies Senior Football Final, 2008.
