Minutes of The Annual Meeting of Sligo County Council Held on 25 June 2007 at 3.00pm in the Council Chamber, County Hall, Riverside, Sligo.

CATHAOIRLEACH:

The Cathaoirleach, Councillor J. McGarry presided.

Councillor J. McGarry thanked the Members, County Manager and Staff for their support and encouragement during his term as Cathaoirleach. He thanked the Meetings Administrator, Communication Staff and Press for their help and co-operation throughout the year.

He referred to a number of highlights during the year including the advancement of some major infrastructural projects, the taking over of the harbour and the many civic receptions held to honour community endeavours. The highlight in his regard was the welcoming home of the Sligo Ladies Football team following their All-Ireland success. 

The members complimented Cllr McGarry on the way he performed his duties during his term of office.

Mr H. Kearns, County Manager on behalf of the Management and Staff of the Council thanked the outgoing Cathaoirleach for his dedication and commitment during his term of office and wished him well.

ELECTION OF CATHAOIRLEACH:

Proposed by Cllr P. Barry
Seconded by Cllr V. Cawley

"That Councillor Seamus Kilgannon be our nomination for the position of Cathaoirleach".

Proposed by Cllr T. McLoughlin
Seconded by Cllr P. McGrath

“That Councillor Ita Fox be our nomination for the position of the Cathaoirleach”.

As agreement could not be reached in relation to the matter the Cathaoirleach, Councillor J. McGarry asked that a poll be taken and that the members indicate their preference for either Councillor S. Kilgannon or Councillor I. Fox

For Kilgannon: Baker, Barry, Bree, Cawley, Colleary, Devins, Gormley, Higgins, Kilgannon, Lundy, MacManus, McGarry, Queenan and Sherlock.

For Fox: Barrett, Conmy, Fleming, Fox, Henry, McGrath, McLoughlin, Mullaney and Murray

As the result was 14 for Kilgannon and 9 for Fox, Councillor J. McGarry declared Councillor S. Kilgannon elected Cathaoirleach.

Councillor Kilgannon took the Chair. He thanked the members for their support and stated that he was honoured to be elected as Cathaoirleach, and looked forward to the year ahead. He invited nominations for the position of Leas Cathaoirleach.

ELECTION OF LEAS CATHAOIRLEACH:

Proposed by Cllr J. Sherlock
Seconded by Cllr D. Bree

"That Councillor Martin Baker be elected as Vice Chairperson of SligoCounty Council".

Proposed by Cllr P. Conmy
Seconded by Cllr M. Fleming

"That Councillor Michael Fleming be elected as Vice Chairperson of Sligo County Council".

As agreement could not be reached in relation to the matter the Cathaoirleach, Cllr S. Kilgannnon asked that a poll be taken and that the members indicate their preference for either Councillor Baker or Councillor Fleming.

For Baker: Baker, Barry, Bree, Cawley, Colleary, Devins, Gormley,  Higgins, Kilgannon, Lundy, MacManus, McGarry, Queenan and Sherlock.

For Fleming: Barrett, Conmy, Fleming, Fox, Henry, McGrath, McLoughlin, Mullaney and Murray.

As the result was 14 votes to 9 in favour of Cllr Baker he was deemed elected Leas Cathaoirleach by the Cathaoirleach Cllr S. Kilgannon.  Cllr Baker thanked his proposer and seconder and the members for their support and looked forward to the year ahead.  The members congratulated Cllr Baker on his position as Leas Cathaoirleach.

AND AGREED

“That a vote of sympathy be extended to Ted and Josephine Nealon on the death of Josephine’s brother, Michael Loughnanne”.

Proposed by Councillor M. Gormley
Seconded by Councillor D. Bree

AND AGREED

“That a vote of sympathy be extended to John F. Murray on the death of his sister, Batty”.

“That a vote of sympathy be extended to Margaret Curley on the death of her mother, Margaret Sweeney”.

“That a vote of sympathy be extended to Ursula Cawley on the death of her husband, Paddy”.

“That a vote of sympathy be extended to Joy Black on the death of her husband, David”.

“That a vote of sympathy be extended to Christy McGuinn on the death of his mother, Alice Maud McGuinn”.
