Strandhill Businesses Unite to Enhance Visitor Experience Through Public Toilet Access Initiative Representatives from Strandhill businesses involved in the WC Strandhill project are joined by Leas Cathaoirleach Sligo County Council Cllr Fergal Nealon and Tourism Officer, Sligo County Council Aidan McCormack

Sligo County Council is pleased to announce the expansion of the WC Sligo public convenience scheme to Strandhill, enabling members of the public to access toilet facilities in participating local businesses.

This initiative, now live on wcsligo.ie, reflects a strong spirit of collaboration among Strandhill’s business community and aims to significantly enhance the visitor experience in one of County Sligo’s most popular coastal destinations.

The scheme is inspired by the European “Nice Toilet” model, which encourages businesses to open their facilities to the public as part of a wider effort to create more welcoming, visitor‑friendly towns and villages. By adopting this approach, Strandhill joins a growing network of European destinations that prioritise comfort, accessibility, and positive visitor engagement.

Speaking about the rollout, Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council Cllr Donal Gilroy acknowledged the commitment shown by Strandhill’s business community, “The willingness of Strandhill businesses to participate demonstrates a shared ambition to support both residents and visitors, particularly during peak tourism periods when demand for facilities increases and we commend them for this extremely positive initiative which will improve the visitor experience in Sligo”.

Mick McEnroe of the National Surf Centre welcomed the initiative, saying: ‘”This scheme is a great example of Strandhill businesses working together to create a better experience for everyone who comes to enjoy this incredible place. The National Surf Centre is proud to play its part in a community‑led effort that supports visitors, strengthens local collaboration, and reflects the positive, welcoming spirit that defines Strandhill.’”

Participating businesses are now clearly listed on wcsligo.ie, where the public can easily find locations offering access to toilets without the need to make a purchase. This simple, user‑friendly service supports Strandhill’s reputation as a vibrant, welcoming, and community‑minded destination along the Wild Atlantic Way.

This initiative also aligns with the Sligo Destination and Experience Development Plan (DEDP), which emphasises high‑quality visitor experiences, community collaboration, and sustainable tourism development across the county. It also supports Age Friendly aims by ensuring access to clean, safe and accessible toilets, contributing to pleasant spaces and buildings and supporting walkable, age‑friendly communities for older people.

The scheme helps to encourage visitors to make use of the service as they explore everything the area has to offer—from its renowned surf culture and coastal walks to its cafés, shops, and local hospitality.
