ENGDOC BIM Specialists took home the ‘Outstanding Achievement Award’ award. ENGDOC BIM Specialists, who represented LEO Sligo at the Awards in 2008, were cited as an ideal example of a company who began with their Local Enterprise Office and then accessed support from Enterprise Ireland to grow their business globally. The company, established in 2006 by David Mullen and Tim King, originally began by producing operation and maintenance manuals and drawings for mechanical and electrical contractors.
As construction became more digital, the business evolved too, embracing new technologies and becoming a specialist in Building Information Modelling (BIM). Now employing 35 people at their headquarters in Sligo, they are involved in some of the most complex international construction projects from schools and hospitals to pharmaceutical facilities and major international data centres.
Sligo was also represented at the Final by Gerry McGowan of GerTEK Project Management & Technical Services Ltd. GerTEK deliver a range of solutions to global leaders in Life Sciences (Pharma, MedTech, Biotech), Data Centres and Semiconductor industries, including: technical project management, technical services, resources and contract staffing, quality and commissioning and project/technology transfer. Gerry’s personal drive and leadership have helped GerTEK to secure blue-chip clients including Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, Google, AbbVie and Abbott — positioning GerTEK as a growth-driven engineering consultancy provider.
Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council, Cllr. Dónal Gilroy said:
“On behalf of Sligo County Council, I extend my heartiest congratulations to both David and his team at ENGDOC BIM Specialists and Gerry and his team at GerTEK Project Management & Technical Services Ltd. They are a shining example of the high caliber of small businesses operating in County Sligo, providing high-quality employment locally and winning business both nationally and internationally. I wish both businesses the very best going forward”.
Liam Kiely, Head of Enterprise, Sligo County Council said:
"We’re delighted to see David and the ENGDOC BIM Specialists team receive due recognition of their fantastic commercial achievements. LEO Sligo have been involved with David and the Co. since shortly after they set up. During that time, we have been consistently impressed with David’s ambition, resilience and determination to grow the business from its base in Sligo town. This award is a fitting testament to the abilities of both David and his team. We also wish to congratulate Gerry McGowan and his GerTEK team for the significant commercial traction they have secured since their inception, and wish them continued success”.
David Mullen, founder and MD, ENGDOC BIM Specialists said:
“This year we’re celebrating 20 years in business, so we’re particularly delighted to receive this award. It’s a fitting recognition for the dedication and hard work of our team. Over the years, we’ve received great support from both LEO Sligo and Enterprise Ireland and we’re determined to carry on securing international business and creating more employment here in Sligo”.
The overall winner at the National Enterprise Awards was Sugar Plum Sweetery who are supported by Local Enterprise Office Westmeath. The self styled “Irish Willy Wonka” business set up by Denise Buckley and David Quirke established the destination sweet and chocolate store in 2022 but it’s been their ability to monetise trends that saw them increase revenue from 2024 to 2025 by 815%.
With two spectacular stores in Mullingar and Kildare Village they plan expansion across Ireland and the UK in the next 18 months to complement their online business and their spot as the top Irish retailer on the TikTok Shop.
Announcing the award winners at the Mansion House, Peter Burke, Minister for Enterprise, Tourism and Employment said;
“The National Enterprise Awards are the highlight of the small business and enterprise calendar, with a growing diversity of businesses and an increasingly high standard among the companies progressing through the process year on year. We have some exceptional winners, but the finalists overall have been outstanding, reflecting the remarkable quality of small businesses right across the country.
