An Taisce Report - IBAL Anti-Litter League, Survey 1 2025

Sligo County Council is delighted to announce that Sligo town has achieved 6th position out of 40 towns / cities surveyed in the Irish Businesses Against Litter (IBAL) league.

Sligo town received the highest rating of all towns / cities in Connacht and the wider Northwest region!

Sligo has yet again been classified as “Cleaner than European Norms” further to similar results in 2024 with eight of the ten sites surveyed achieving the top grade. The result follows Sligo town’s Gold Medal Award in the 2024 Tidy Towns Competition and is testament to the excellent work by Sligo Tidy Towns, various departments within Sligo County Council and other stakeholders within the urban area.

The sites surveyed and commended included the N4 Ray MacSharry / Joe Banks Approach Road, Doorly Park / Playground, Bring Facility at Connaughton Road and O’Connell Street – these sites were not just described as good with regards to litter but also freshly presented and maintained. Queen Maeve’s Square is described as a lovely new addition to the town of Sligo – attractively laid out and looking very well. Doorly Park & Playground were earmarked for particular praise.  Not only was the complete absence of litter noted, the whole presentation and maintenance was outlined as excellent with a variety of facilities within e.g. play areas, PE equipment, picnic tables, outdoor musical instruments, playing pitch etc.

The second anti-litter survey for 2025 is due to be completed before the end of this year.
