Sligo County Council has welcomed the announcement by Minister for Climate, Energy and the Environment, Darragh O’Brien, of the new Community Climate Action Fund.
Funding for Community Climate Action
Council welcomes fund to continue support for community climate action in Co. Sligo
This fund is being made available to organisations and community groups interested in developing capital projects that address the challenge of climate change. The Community Climate Action Programme will support the ongoing delivery of the five-year Climate Action Plan for County Sligo, which is currently completing Phase 1.
From a total national fund of €24 million, Sligo County Council has been allocated €405,000 for community and not-for-profit groups within the county. The funding is intended for capital investment in small, medium, and large-scale community climate action projects under five themes: Community Energy, Travel, Food and Waste, Shopping and Recycling, and Local Climate and Environmental Action.
Applications for the Community Climate Action Programme will be available through the Sligo County Council website from Tuesday, 28th October, and will remain open until Tuesday, 23rd December, 2025.
Ahead of the opening of the Climate Action Fund, Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council, Cllr Gilroy said:
"I am delighted to welcome the announcement of the new Community Climate Action Fund. This vital support will empower local community groups across Sligo to take meaningful action on climate change through innovative projects. Together, we can build a sustainable future for our county and inspire positive change at the grassroots level."
Chief Executive of Sligo County Council, Martin Lydon, added:
“The evidence around climate change and the enormous impact it is having—and will continue to have—is unequivocal. The challenge to mitigate its effects is immense, but Sligo County Council is committed to delivering on the pledges contained within our Climate Action Plan. This fund empowers communities to be part of that journey.”
