Stop Unauthorised Waste Collectors

Stop Unauthorised Waste Collectors

If you are a householder, business or industry, please note that it is an offence to hand over your waste to an un‑authorised waste collector.

Bogus or unpermitted waste collectors often operate by calling door‑to‑door or advertising online and on flyers. They may offer to remove items such as old appliances, garage clear‑outs, bags of rubbish or general household waste at a low price. Do not hand over your waste unless you are certain the collector is authorised.

Always Ask for a Waste Collection Permit

Before giving waste to any collector, ask to see a copy of their Waste Collection Permit.
The permit cover must clearly show:

  • The collector’s name and address
  • Their Waste Collection Permit Number

All legitimate waste collectors must hold a valid permit issued by the National Waste Collection Permit Office (NWCPO). You can view the full list of registered collectors on the NWCPO website: http://www.nwcpo.ie/

Your Waste is Your Responsibility

If someone offers to take your waste cheaply, there is a real risk it will be illegally dumped — in a bog, a field, roadside, or scenic area. If evidence relating to you is found in illegally disposed waste, you could face a fine of up to €5,000 or 12 months imprisonment if prosecuted in court.

Ultimately, you, as the waste holder, are legally responsible for ensuring your waste is disposed of correctly and only by an authorised collector.

Stay Informed. Stay Protected.

Using a permitted collector protects you, your community, and the environment. If in doubt, verify the permit or report suspected bogus collectors to Sligo County Council on 071 9111 457 / 071 9111 454.
