Minutes of Annual General Meeting of The Municipal District of Sligo-Drumcliff held on Friday 19th June 2019 at 12.00 p.m. in The Council Chamber, County Hall, Riverside, Sligo

CATHAOIRLEACH:

Before the meeting commenced, the Cathaoirleach, Councillor Tom Fox, proposed that a minute’s silence be observed as a mark of respect to the late Detective Garda Colm Horkan (R.I.P.) who tragically lost his life in the line of duty earlier in the week.  This proposal was unanimously supported by Members.

Following the minute’s silence, Members extended their sympathies to the family of Detective Garda Horkan and decided to go as a group to Sligo Garda Station to sign the book of condolences.

 

1.  ELECTION OF CATHAOIRLEACH:

Prior to the election, a request was made by Councillor Healy and Councillor Gilroy for the adoption of the D’Hondt system, which was not agreed by Members. 

Members thanked and congratulated outgoing Cathaoirleach, Councillor Tom Fox on his term as Chair. 

It was then:

Proposed by Councillor T. Fox
Seconded by Councillor M. Cassserly

“To elect Councillor Thomas Walsh as Cathaoirleach of the Sligo-Drumcliff Municipal District”.

Proposed by Councillor D. Gilroy
Seconded by Councillor T. Healy

“To elect Councillor Thomas Healy as Cathaoirleach of the Sligo-Drumcliff Municipal District”.

A vote was called by the Cathaoirleach, the results of which were as follows:

FOR COUNCILLOR WALSH:  Councillor Casserly, Councillor Fox and Councillor Walsh (3)

FOR COUNCILLOR HEALY:   Councillors Gilroy and Councillor Healy (2)

Councillor Thomas Walsh was deemed Cathaoirleach of the Sligo-Drumcliff Municipal District.

Councillor Walsh then assumed the Chair and expressed his honour and delight at being elected to the position.  He thanked his proposer and seconder, his family and Director of Elections who were present in the Chamber.  He also paid tribute to those working on the frontline dealing with the current Covid-19 crisis.

The new Cathaoirleach went on to acknowledge the capital projects currently underway in Sligo and highlighted the significance of proposed projects in the Municipal District such as the Spanish Armada Interpretative Centre in Grange, the SLNCR Greenway and the Footpath Improvement Scheme.  He also welcomed the announcement of a number of proposed concerts at Lissadell, adding that he would like to see a broad festivals and events strategy brought forward by the Council in the coming year.  

The Chief Executive joined Members in congratulating Councillor Walsh on his election as Cathaoirleach and assured him of the Executive’s support in the year ahead.

 

2.  ELECTION OF LEAS-CHATHAOIRLEACH:

Proposed by Councillor M. Casserly
Seconded by Councillor T. Walsh

AND AGREED

“That Councillor Tom Fox be elected as Leas-Chathaoirleach of the Sligo-Drumcliff Municipal District”.

 

The business of the meeting concluded at 12.40 p.m.
