Minutes of Annual General Meeting of Sligo County Council held on Friday 22nd June, 2012 at 12 Noon in The Council Chamber, County Hall, Riverside, Sligo.

CATHAOIRLEACH:

The Cathaoirleach, Councillor M. Fleming presided.

 

Councillor M. Fleming thanked the Members, County Manager and Staff for their co-operation and advice during his term as Cathaoirleach. He formally thanked the Leas-Cathaoirleach Councillor Matt Lyons for his support through the year.

Councillor Fleming acknowledged that it had been a challenging year and he felt the Council had worked through it with diligence and professionalism.

He also thanked the Meetings Administrator, Communication Staff and Press for their help and co-operation throughout the year.

 

The Members complimented Councillor Fleming on the way he performed his duties during his term of office. They thanked him for the way in which he conducted the meetings in a fair, efficient and even handed manner in what was a difficult year for the Council.

 

Mr T. Kilfeather, Acting/County Manager, on behalf of the Management and Staff of the Council thanked the outgoing Cathaoirleach for his courtesy and kindness during his term of office and wished him well.

 

ELECTION OF CATHAOIRLEACH:

Proposed by Councillor J. McGarry
Seconded by Councillor D. Cawley 

"That Councillor V. Cawley be nominated for the position of Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council.”

 

Proposed by Councillor J. Lundy
Seconded by Councillor J. Devins 

"That Councillor J. Queenan be nominated for the position of Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council.”

As there were 2 nominees for the position of Cathaoirleach, Councillor M. Fleming called for a vote and that the members indicate their preference for either Councillor V. Cawley or Councillor J. Queenan.

For V. Cawley: Barrett, D. Cawley, V. Cawley, Clarke, Collery, Fleming, Keaney, Leonard, Lyons, McGarry, McGrath, Mullaney, Mulvey, Murray.

For Queenan: Baker, Barry, Devins, Healy McGowan, Lundy, MacManus, O’Grady, Queenan.

Abstain: Bree.

As the vote was 14 for Cawley, 8 for Queenan and 1 Abstention Councillor Fleming declared Councillor Veronica Cawley elected as Cathaoirleach.

Councillor Cawley took the Chair and addressed the meeting.  She thanked the Members for their support and stated that she was honoured to be elected to the office of Cathaoirleach and looked forward to the challenges of the year ahead.

The members congratulated Councillor Cawley on her election to the Chair.

The Cathaoirleach then asked for nominations for the position of Leas Cathaoirleach.

 

ELECTION OF LEAS CATHAOIRLEACH:

Proposed by Councillor D. Healy McGowan
Seconded by Councillor M. Baker 

"That Councillor P. Barry be nominated for the position of Leas Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council.”

 

Proposed by Councillor M. Barrett
Seconded by Councillor T. Collery 

"That Councillor D. Mulvey be nominated for the position of Leas Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council.”

As there were 2 nominees for the position of Leas Cathaoirleach, the Cathaoirleach called for a vote and that the members indicate their preference for either Councillor P. Barry or Councillor D. Mulvey.

For Barry: Baker, Barry, Devins, Healy McGowan, Lundy, MacManus, O’Grady, Queenan.

For Mulvey: Barrett, D. Cawley, V. Cawley, Collery, Fleming, Keaney, Leonard, Lyons, McGarry, McGrath, Mullaney, Mulvey, Murray.

Abstain: Bree and Clarke.  

As the vote was 8 for Barry, 13 for Mulvey and 2 Abstentions the Cathaoirleach declared Councillor Dara Mulvey elected as Leas Cathaoirleach.

Councillor Mulvey thanked his supporters and wished the newly elected Cathaoirleach well.

The Cathaoirleach, Councillor V. Cawley explained to the members that notification had been received from the President of IT Sligo, Ms Terri Scott requesting to address the members at the earliest opportunity.

The members agreed that if the date was suitable, Ms Scott could address the Ordinary July meeting, to be held on Monday 2nd July at 11.00am.
