New National Heritage Plan for Ireland

Time for Sligo to have a say on the new National Heritage Plan for Ireland

Heritage Ireland 2030 – The new heritage plan for Ireland is currently being prepared and the people of Sligo have been invited to make a contribution. With just over two weeks to go to the deadline for submissions – 31st March 2019 – there is a great opportunity for the people of Sligo to have their views heard on the future management and promotion of heritage nationally and within their own local area.

Heritage Ireland 2030 - is based around three themes: national leadership, supporting stronger heritage partnerships and, building community and local involvement in heritage.  The final plan will shape the policies which will guide the government’s heritage priorities and investments over the next decade and beyond.

Siobhán Ryan, Heritage Officer with Sligo County Council outlined that

“It’s been 17 years since the publication of the first National Heritage Plan.  A lot has changed in that time, there have been significant cuts to the national heritage budget with consequences for programming, heritage actions and human resources in the sector.  But at a time when the country was in a deep financial crisis, we saw the growth of new heritage partnerships, the development of heritage services within local government and most significantly an unprecedented increase in community engagement with our natural and built heritage.  Heritage Ireland 2030 is the opportunity for individuals and groups involved in the management and protection of heritage to make their views known to central Government.  It is an opportunity to convey to the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht the importance of heritage to local communities across Ireland.  Future priorities and, of course, funding for the heritage sector will be guided by the results of this consultation, so we would really encourage as many people as possible to get involved.”
