Welcoming the students, the Mayor said ‘We are proud of our reputation as a welcoming community, and our town and county has been greatly enhanced in recent years by people from different nationalities, cultures and backgrounds making Sligo their home.
International Links
We greatly value our international links, and Sligo County Council has signed formal Twinning Charters with Kempten in Germany, Crozon in France and Tallahassee in Florida. While the civic links were initiated by the respective local authorities, the associations have grown and evolved across a whole range of levels, including education, sports, arts, and tourism.
Education
Probably the most active of these networks is in the area of education, and IT Sligo and St Angela’s College have been very strong and active players in fostering these links .For that reason, it is a special pleasure you here today, along with your International Group Leaders and lecturers in IT Sligo.’
The Mayor concluded his address by commending Maria Lahiff of JuLúRú Farm and Forest Activities for Managing the Future Learning Summer School and for coordinating the arrangements for the visit.
