Hackney Licences

Sligo County Council is authorised to issue hackney licences to residents in the Council’s functional area.

Local authorities are responsible for the issue of Hackney Licences (small public service vehicle licences) on vehicles with a passenger capacity of up to eight persons.  Large public service vehicle licences are issued by An Gardai Siochana.

Conditional offer of new Licence

A letter of Conditional Offer of a Hackney Licence may be issued to an applicant bearing the licence number which will appear on the actual licence and a specified date for taking up the offer ie two months from date of offer.  The following is required for the issue of a conditional offer of a Hackney Licence:

• Completed application form
• Fee of €250

Issue of New Licence

Hackney Licences are valid for a period of one year from the date of issue.  The following is required for the issue of a new Hackney Licence.

• Completed application form (may have already been submitted as above)
• Fee of €250 (may already have been submitted as above)
• Vehicle test certificate and certificate of suitability issued by NCTS
• Certificate of Hackney Insurance (covering the vehicle for use as a PSV)
• Public Service Vehicle (PSV) Driver’s Licence (issued by the PSV Inspector at the Garda Siochana Pearse Road, Sligo)
• Tax Clearance Certificate

Renewal of Existing Licence

Hackney Licences should be renewed annually.  They may only be renewed within a period of 2 months from the date of expiry of existing licence at the renewal fee of €125. 

The new licence is dated from the date of expiry of the old licence for a period of one year.  However, if, on renewal of a hackney licence, the previous licence is expired for more than two months, the old licence is deemed to have lapsed and thus, a fee of €250, as with a new licence, now applies when issuing the next licence.  In this case, the new licence will be dated from the date of issue fro a period of one year. 

The following is required for the renewal of an existing Hackney Licence:

• Expired Hackney Licence
• Completed renewal application form
• Fee of €125 (if renewed within 2 months of expiry)
• Fee of €250 (if over 2 months of expiry)
• Vehicle test certificate and issued by NCTS
• Certificate of Hackney Insurance
• Tax Clearance Certificate

Transfer of Hackney Licence to a new Vehicle

An applicant may have a Hackney Licence transferred to a new vehicle on receipt of the following

• Proof of ownership of new vehicle (Vehicle Registration Certificate)
• Current Hackney Licence
• Completed transfer application form
• Fee of €125 (treated the same as a renewal)
• Vehicle test certificate and certificate of suitability issued by NCTS
• Certificate of Hackney Insurance
• Tax Clearance Certification

Please note that the transferred licence should be dated from the date of issue for a period of one year

Replacement Hackney Licence (for lost or stolen licence)

A replacement Hackney Licence may be issued in the event of a licence being lost of stolen.  The following documents are required:

• Declaration from applicant stating that his/her Hackney Licence has been lost or stolen, signed in the presence of a member of An Garda Siochana
• Application form for replacement licence
• €6.00 fee
