Green Garden Waste
Green waste is organic waste sourced from the garden or from landscaping activities. It generally includes grass, hedge cuttings, bushes, tree toppings, prunings or other woody material. It is generally not accepted for land-filling and as such should be separated for composting or delivery to a green waste facility.
Do compost as much green waste as possible
Composting kits are available very cheap from the county council – see composting section.

A Green Waste Facility is available at the Ballisodare Composting Facility, Youngs Quarry, Ballisodare.

(Operated by Ballisodare Community Council in conjunction with Sligo County Council)
Green Waste only accepted i.e. grass clippings, hedge trimmings, trees, bushes, shrubs, leaf litter etc.
Any other waste type will not be accepted onsite.
Materials brought to the site should be free of contaminants such as plastic, metal and general rubbish.

Tuesday - Friday 10:00 am - 1:00pm and 2:00pm - 4:00pm
Saturday 10:00am - 2:00pm

Directions to Composting Facility
Sligo town
- Take the N4 Dublin road
- Turn left at Ballisodare interchange
- At T Junction turn right
- Continue on until arrive at mini roundabout in Ballisodare village
- Take the first exit
- Continue for 1 km Composting Facility on the right.
Dromore West
- Take N59 road
- Stay on N59 until arrive in Ballisodare
- Turn left continue for 200 metres through the village
- At mini roundabout take the second exit
- Continue for 1km and green waste facility is on the right

Be Aware, Burning Green Waste is Illegal
It is prohibited under the Waste Management Act 1996 - 2003 and the Air Pollution Act 1987 to burn green waste.
When can I cut trees or hedges?
Under the Wildlife (Amendment) Act, you cannot cut hedges or trees during the bird breeding season. It says:
It is an offence for a person to cut, grub, burn or otherwise destroy, during the period beginning on the 1st day of March and ending on the 31st day of August in any year, any vegetation growing on any land. There are 55 species of birds that nest in hedges in Ireland, and this is for their protection.
