LOCAL AUTHORITY AGM’S
The annual general meetings of Sligo Borough Council and Sligo County Council take place on Monday 26th June. The members of the Borough Council will elect a new mayor and a new Cathaoirleach will be elected by Sligo County Council. Traditionally the new incumbents will avail of the annual general meeting to set out their main objectives for their one year term
VOLUNTEER INFORMATION SESSIONS
Sligo Volunteer Centre will host a series of information sessions around the county. The sessions will be of interest to community group representatives and anyone interested in serving as a volunteer. They will be hosted in Sligo, Tubbercurry, Strandhill, Easkey and Ballymote.
WATER SAFETY
This month Sligo County Council will deploy beach wardens and beach guards on Sligo’s main beaches. For the next few weeks the service is operated at weekends only with two beach guards at Enniscrone, Mullaghmore, and Rosses Point. During the busier months of July and August there will be three guards on duty from 11.00am to 7.00pm each day, and at weekends at Dunmoran.
CONSULTING WITH LOCAL BUSINESSES
With proposals being finalised to pedestrianise O’Connell Street in mid August, Sligo Local Authorities are consulting with local business people and other stakeholders to advise of the various arrangements. The ‘Traffic & Transportation Plan’ for Sligo identified the pedestrianisation of Sligo’s core streets as a priority following the opening of the inner relief road. The removal of traffic from Sligo’s main street will enhance Sligo city centre and will add another dimension to the ‘shopping experience’ in Sligo.
WATER METERING
The recent series of information sessions on water metering hosted by Sligo County Council and Veoila (Ireland) Ltd were very well attended by both the business and farming community. There was a particular interest shown in the area of water conservation – advice and tips on this subject can be accessed on Sligo County Council’s website at www.sligococo.ie
The Council recently signed a €2.8m contract for the metering of private group schemes and critical mains replacement, which will be of major benefit to group schemes in their efforts to conserve water.
REWARDING THE COMMUNITY
Sligo County Council hosted two receptions recently to reward people who make a special contribution to their community. The Pride of Place Awards acknowledged the special contribution of the dedicated people in Aclare, Coolaney, Enniscrone and Cranmore. The Cathaoirleach’s Awards winners for 2006 were South Sligo Macra na Feirme, Eugene O Connor, Pegasus, Seamus McCormack, Realt na Mara National School, Tony Clarke and Ransboro Development Association.
