Sligo County Council is seeking the views of the public in the preparation of a Heritage Plan for the county. The views of all the community are important, and so an extensive public consultation process is planned. Submissions are invited until 31st May 2006 from members of the public, schools, community groups, tidy towns groups…. in fact anyone who has an interest in the heritage of the County! We hope to ensure that the Heritage Plan will represent the views of all the people of Sligo.
“Heritage” includes everything that we have inherited from our past, and want to maintain for the future. At a local level, heritage is what makes our area special, what distinguishes it from any other place. It includes:
The new Heritage Plan will aim to cover all of these aspects of the Heritage of Sligo—but perhaps there is something else you would like to include? County Sligo Heritage Forum aims to secure benefits for the heritage of County Sligo and to increase awareness, appreciation and enjoyment of it for all.
What we value today will shape the future of Sligo so this is the chance for you to say what you value of Sligo’s heritage. Heritage is important to our quality of life …. whether it is the architecture in our towns, the beach where we walk the dog, the memories of our grandparents, the thatched cottage down the road to the graveyard where out ancestors are buried, all of this is part of our heritage.
Over 90% of the key actions have been addressed. These wide-ranging actions include the distribution of nearly €250,000 in heritage grants since 2003 and a schools’ seashore project that took first place in European IT competition.
Information has been collated for the first time on many aspects of Sligo’s heritage. Regular workshops and networking events for 100+ heritage interest groups in the county has been organised. The Field Monument scheme offers free advice to landowners with some of Sligo’s 6500+ recorded monuments on their land. Meanwhile various types of heritage plans have been developed involving local communities integral in the conservation and enhancement of our heritage.
