The objective of the Programme is to meet community needs through promoting environmentally sustainable development within the towns and villages. It assists vibrant local communities to maintain and enhance their cultural identity as well as assisting with the eradication of dereliction. Communities are encouraged to help themselves by identifying their own needs in a planned and integrated way, in partnership with Sligo County Council.

The impact of the previous Urban and Village Renewal programme was significant and complemented the input by Sligo County Council in the development of infrastructure and amenities of the county’s towns and villages. In partnership with Community Development Associations the improvements have made our towns and villages more attractive places to live in, have encouraged investment, have furnished local communities with pride in their own areas and have a major impact on the quality of life for residents of these areas.

The new Programme 2001- 2006 is underway and the Council has approved a list of villages/towns, 3 per year, up to 2006 to receive funding under the Programme:

• Ballymote, Curry and Easkey were included in the programme in 2001.
• Riverstown, Gurteen and Rosses Point are being dealt with in 2002. 

                
- Work in Progress Riverstown - Main Street - After

The work that has been carried out was a result of consultation with Community groups and is included in Action Plans for their area. The works to date include the:

• Installation of ducting for both ESB and Eircom’s overhead network.
• Replacement of footpaths, public lighting, amenity areas, car parking.
• Landscaping and general improvements to the appearance of towns and villages.

Urban and Village Renewal Programme 2006

There is a major increase in funding in this programme for 2006. The total grant will be €999,780.

Three projects in the County and one in Sligo Borough will be undertaken. The Villages to be addressed in the County are:-

• Ballisodare
• Coolaney
• Ballinacarrow

This is the final phase of the 2001-2006 Urban and Village Renewal Programme.
