Sligo County Council led Peace II Task Force

The Sligo County Council led Peace II Task Force recently received the welcome news that the EU Programme for Peace and Reconciliation would be extended until December 2006 with spend continuing into mid 2008.

The Task Force under the old Programme was responsible for the administration of three Measures namely 3.3, 3.4 and 4.2a under the new Programme these Measures are amalgamated into one expanded Measure 3.3 which will be renamed Building Better Communities and Improving Rural Communities in the Border Region.

The Task Force allocation under the extension will be €1,033,000 which be drawn down over the next three years. Since 2000 a total of €3.7million has been allocated to the Task Force.

The following are some of the activities that will be considered under the new Measure;

  • Support for local transport initiatives where particular local need exists and where they lead to greater mobility and improved equality of access for women, people with disabilities and other less likely to have access to transport;
  • The provision of arts and cultural facilities;
  • Support for the involvement of local communities in devising and delivering economic, social and environmental regeneration strategies;
  • The provision of recreation and leisure facilities such as play areas for children;
  • The improvement of access to community centres;
  • Support for small tourist product initiatives, which enhance the visitor appeal of an area.
  • Projects aimed at developing rural based tourism, local heritage and cultural based activities and off farm craft related enterprise.
  • Improvements which enhance the physical environment of housing estates and local infrastructure, particularly, projects in communities most affected by displacement of or the effects of the NI conflict.
  • Cultural and arts-based initiatives, particularly those promoted by young people.
  • The development of open spaces and derelict sites to enhance the local environment and tourism potential, this might include landscaping of streets, public areas and open spaces with a view to support the regeneration of urban areas as attractive commercial and residential locations.
  • The innovative use of derelict buildings.
  • The conservation of buildings of significant architectural merit;
  • The improvement of access to community centres;
  • Work with Regional Tourism Organisation (RTO’s) to identify marketing strategies which capitalise on opportunities for county and border region based tourism marketing;
  • Encourage the use of events as a marketing tool to attract more visitors to the border region;
  • Improvements which enhance the commercial and residential attractiveness;
  • Social economy support for the provision of neighbourhood services;
  • Local infrastructure projects, such as the construction of cycle and walking tracts in the context of wider healthy lifestyle initiatives.
  • Developing marketing activity, which will ensure the long-term support of the local tourism sector.
  • To develop tourism products to enhance the region as a tourism destination.
