Sligo Community Forum, established in March 2000, is a representative body of community groups and voluntary organisations active and operating in County Sligo. It provides a platform for affiliated community and voluntary groups to exchange information, share experiences, and work collectively to voice issues and concerns relating to economic, social and cultural development of the county. County & City Community Forums were established through out the country in 2002. The concept for the establishment of a Community and Voluntary Forums throughout the country was initiated through the Interdepartmental Task Force on the Integration of Local Government and Local Development Systems. A key objective of the Community Forum in 2005 is to establish a network of Area Fora at grass roots based on the electoral area divisions. The aim of Area Fora is to ensure this two way communications between the Executive of the Forum and all groups they represent. This is essential if the Community Forum is seen as an umbrella, representative group of the Community and Voluntary sector in County Sligo.

Area Fora’s

The election process enabled the Community Forum to outline to local community groups on the ground, the vision and objectives of establishing local Area Fora’s. Local Area Fora’s will become an essential tool in tackling local issues and feeding back information to the grassroots. The election process ensured that all community groups that participated in the elections would be invited to become involved in the establishment of local Area Fora’s.

The Community Forum Executive in partnership with the staff of the Office of Community, Enterprise & the Arts will be responsible for the establishment and supporting of Area Fora’s in the initial development stage.

There was significant interest among community groups throughout the county in the election process with high attendance at the information meetings and election nights
