Drinking Water Legislation

The quality of drinking water in Ireland is governed by the European Communities (Drinking Water) (Number 2) Regulations 2007 - 179 kbs

Application of the Regulations

These Regulations apply to all Public Water Supplies, all Private and Public Group Water Schemes, and all Private Water supplies with the exception of the following:
  • Individual supplies producing less than 10 cubic metres a day on average or serving fewer than 50 persons provided that those supplies are not used in a commercial or public activity, i.e., hotel, B & B, commercial outlet, public amenity, dairy farm, etc.

Duty of the Water Supplier

There is a duty on all water suppliers to ensure that their water is wholesome and clean and that it meets with the requirements of the Regulations.

Supervisory Authority

Each Water Services Authority (County Council) is the supervisory authority for all drinking water supplies in its functional area, other than its own Public Water Supplies. The Environmental Protection Agency is the Supervisory Authority for all Public Water Supplies.
