The Council

There are 25 Councillors in total in Sligo County Council representing 5 Electoral Areas:

  • Strandhill 
  • Drumcliffe
  • Ballymote
  • Dromore West
  • Tubbercurry

The Cathaoirleach (Chairman) for Sligo County Council is currently elected by the members and his office runs for one year. The current Cathaoirleach is Cllr. Michael Fleming.

The Council also has a Leas Cathaoirleach (Vice Chairman) The current Leas Cathaoirleach is Cllr. Matt Lyons
The Local Government Act 2001 states that in 2004, the Cathaoirleach and Leas Cathaoirleach will be elected by the people.


The Cathaoirleach may decide to hold functions and civic receptions for distinguished guests or to mark a historical achievement 

As stipulated in the City and County Management Acts, The members are responsible for carrying out Reserved Functions whereas the Manager is responsible for Executive Functions

Reserved functions relate to matters of policy such as - 

  • The adoption of the Annual Budget
  • The borrowing of money
  • The making and revising of development plans and byelaws
  • The adopting of building programmes etc ..
Executive functions relate to the operations of the Council on a day to day basis such as 
  • The employment of staff
  • Property management
  • Planning decisions
  • Administration of Council’s affairs etc.
