Prevention is the only solution.
Make an effort not to generate waste.
This is the most environmentally friendly way of helping to reduce the growing mountain of waste.
Know the 3R’s – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Trends for Sligo are showing an increase in waste going to landfill and a reduction in recycling figures. These trends are heading the opposite direction to how they should be and we ALL could pay the price if on a national level we don’t meet our EU Landfill and Recycling targets by 2015. As a nation, we are currently paying more than enough charges without the possibility of further charges being imposed by Europe for not meeting these targets.
In an effort to address these trends and become more efficient in how we dispose of our household waste, Sligo County Council would like to highlight how to correctly dispose of waste and to also raise public awareness of the recycling facilities operating around the Borough and County area. Using the facilities available to you will help you save money and be environmentally friendly as well as working towards achieving the targets set for 2015.
Householders, be aware that there is a 3 bin service available to you:
Currently, most householders are only availing of two or even one of these services. Please be aware that a third segregation stream i.e. Organic Waste Collection Bin is available and to make arrangements for this service, contact any of the waste collectors operating in your area. All of these waste collectors are obliged under legislation to provide the necessary bins required and to outline collection days and times for your area – see table below for contact names and details of all permitted waste collectors operating in Sligo:
|Waste Collector:||Contact Number:|
|Greenstar Waste Disposal||Lo call 1890-600-900 / 01-2947900|
|McGraths Waste Disposal||094-9031315|
|WERS Waste||1890-229-377 / 093-24027|
|Donegal Waste Disposal||074-9551412 / 95-51413|
|G&N Loftus Recycling and Sons Ltd.||096-32500 / 087-2919763 / 087-2349875|
The provision of a third bin does not necessarily mean an extra household bill. Remember, the landfill bin should not need to be presented for kerbside collection as often as it is. It should be the least used if correct segregation of waste is adhered to. The landfill bin is the most expensive bin so therefore it stands to reason that correct disposal of waste will save you money in the long run.
If any problems are encountered in regard to the provision of a third bin following contact with the waste collector operating in the area, please contact Environmental Services, Sligo County Council on 071-9111907.
