In 2009, the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government designated Sligo Bay and Drumcliff Bay as shellfish areas in accordance with the Shellfish Waters Directive 2006/113/EC and the Quality of Shellfish Waters Regulations 2006 (S.I. No. 268 of 2006). The DOEHLG has published Pollution Reduction Programmes for both Sligo Bay and Drumcliff Bay which must be implemented by Sligo County Council.
As part of the programme of actions detailed in the Pollution Reduction Programmes, the Environment Section of Sligo County Council will be carrying out farm inspections and inspections of wastewater treatment systems serving commercial premises and domestic houses in the catchment areas of Sligo Bay and Drumcliff Bay. These inspections are due to commence in July 2010. Farm inspections will be carried out to determine compliance with the European Communities (Good Agricultural Practice for Protection of Waters) Regulations 2009 (S.I. No. 101 of 2009).
