Road Schemes
DEVELOPING A HIGH QUALITY ROADS NETWORK
One of our main responsibilities as a Local Authority is to plan and deliver high quality transport and service infrastructure to meet future demands of the commercial and private sector. Businesses and people want to be where there is a wide range of infrastructure and facilities. In this context Sligo is very well positioned as a key centre for economic growth in the northwest, and the construction of major infrastructural projects, such as the new Inner Relief Road, sends a positive message to existing and potential enterprises that the Local Authorities will deliver for Sligo.
Among the major roads initiatives being progressed are improvements to the National Primary Road network (see tables below), the Eastern Garavogue River Bridge and the Western Distributor Road, which will provide vital access to the IDA Business and Technology Park in Finisklin and the proposed IDA Park at Oakfield. The delivery of these projects will ensure Sligo will be well placed to attract new investment and employment to Sligo.
In 2007 the NRA allocation of €7.5m enabled Sligo County Council Road Design Office to advance the planning of the following major projects:
MAJOR NATIONAL PRIMARY ROAD PROJECTS
N4/N15 - Sligo to County Boundary
A Preferred Route was adopted by Sligo County Council and Sligo Borough Council in 2006. The route extends from Hughes Bridge in Sligo to the boundary with Co. Leitrim, a length of 26km. A Contract was signed with Ryan Hanley WSP Ltd. in early November, 2007 for provision of Engineering Consultancy Services. The Contract will include preparation of Preliminary Report, Environmental Impact Statement and Compulsory Purchase Order documentation. A Traffic Study for Sligo City will also be carried out which will inform other proposals for roads in Sligo and Environs and will include proposals for widening of Hughes Bridge. It will be a three year contract, with completion of preliminary Design, EIS and CPO documentation after two years and statutory procedures to be completed by end of three years ie. CPO process to be completed by end 2010.
N17 Tubbercurry By-Pass
This 10km Scheme extends from Rathscanlon, south of Tobercurry to Tullyhugh, just north of Achonry NCF premises. The Preliminary Design, EIS and CPO Documentation for Type 2 Dual Carriageway was forwarded to NRA in April 2007. It is expected that approval will be given in the current year to progress to the next stage.
N17 Collooney to Tubbercurry
This 14km scheme extends from the proposed Tobercurry Bypass at Tullyhugh to Collooney. The Preliminary Design is being revised to provide Type 2 Dual Carriageway to Collooney Roundabout. The Preliminary Design, EIS and CPO documentation is to be finalised in 2008, subject to NRA funding and approval.
Improvement of Non-National Routes
The N15 and N17 are designated part of Atlantic Route Corridor which has been prioritised for development under Transport 21 initiatives. A grant of €12.5m from DOEHLG helped continue the restoration and improvement of 2,500km of non-national road in the county. A three year programme for the restoration of Non-National routes in Co. Sligo over the period 2008 – 2010 has been submitted to DOEHLG for approval. This investment helps to promote rural development and social inclusion particularly in the more isolated parts of County Sligo.Sligo
