Provision of Information Leaflets in Various Languages

Circular F.23/08

In advance of the 2009 European Parliament and Local Elections, the following three information leaflets on the electoral system are being translated into a number of different foreign languages:

  • Register of Electors;
  • European Parliament: How Ireland’s Representatives are Elected; and
  • How Members of Local Authorities are Elected.

These leaflets are currently available in Irish and English and are being made available in the following languages:

  • Chinese (Mandarin)
  • Polish
  • Slovak
  • Latvian
  • Romanian
  • Lithuanian
  • Russian

The leaflets will be distributed to all registration authorities and other relevant organisations, including foreign embassies. Initially, stocks of the Register of Electors leaflet are being distributed and are enclosed.

The remaining two leaflets (European Parliament: How Ireland’s Representatives are Elected” and “How Members of Local Authorities are Elected) will be updated following the enactment of the Electoral (Amendment) Bill 2008. This Bill provides for the revision of Dáil and European Parliament constituencies and will implement new assent/deposit procedures for non-party candidates at European Parliament and Local Elections (similar to those which applied at the Dáil general election in 2007). When these leaflets are updated to take account of the new legislation stocks will be forwarded to authorities.
