In the interests of protecting our water quality, Sligo County Council have recognised the importance of designing on-site treatment systems which take account of the characteristics of the site and the vulnerability of groundwater resources.  The key to protecting water quality is to ensure that new development is guided towards sites where acceptable On-Site Wastewater Treatment Systems (OSWWTS) can be provided.  The identification of a suitable site is largely dependent upon the quality of the site assessment being undertaken by the consultant when preparing an application for planning permission. 

In order to improve the protection of water quality, and to ensure consistency in the design of On-site Wastewater Treatment Systems (OSWWTS) (In light of the “Environmental Protection Agency Code of Practice on Wastewater Treatment and Disposal Systems serving Single Houses (p.e. ≤ 10)”;) Sligo County Council has set up a new panel of approved Site Assessors. Members of the panel will be required to carry out the site assessment, design, supervise the installation and certify the installation of the OSWWTS.

As and from 1st May 2011 any planning application for a development which includes an on-site wastewater treatment system should only be submitted where the site suitability assessment and design of the system has been carried out by a member of the recently formed approved panel of site assessor’s. The panel of site assessors shall be open to regular review and assessors may be included or removed from the panel at the discretion of Sligo County Council.

The following list of assessors offers the necessary qualifications and experience to carry out site suitability assessment and design of the On-site Wastewater treatment Systems.
