Draft Charlestown–Bellaghy Local Area Plan


Public Consultation  -  9th September to 23rd October 2009

Sligo Council Council and Mayo County Council propose to make a Local Area Plan for the combined areas of Bellaghy, Co. Sligo, and Charlestown, Co. Mayo, in accordance with sections 18-20 of the Planning and Development Act 2000 (as amended).

Following consultation with a wide range of local interests, a Draft Charlestown–Bellaghy Local Area Plan has been prepared, consisting of a written document and a set of maps. The Plan sets out detailed objectives and land use zoning proposals for the town, including objectives for housing, community facilities, open space, employment and town-centre development. It also addresses issues such as transport, infrastructure and the protection of heritage assets.

Following screening and consultation with prescribed environmental authorities, the planning authorities have determined that the implementation of Charlestown– Bellaghy Local Area Plan is not likely to have significant effects on the environment. Therefore, Strategic Environmental Assessment is not required.

A Habitats Directive Assessment (HDA/“appropriate assessment”) Screening Report has also been prepared in accordance with Article 6 of the Habitats Directive (92/43/EEC).

Public consultation is an essential part of the local area plan process. It is important therefore, that the Draft Plan is examined and considered by anyone living, working or interested in the Charlestown–Bellaghy area. 

Copies of the Draft LAP, SEA Screening Report and the HDA Screening Report will be available for inspection or purchase from Wednesday 9th September to Friday 23rd October 2009 (both dates included) at the following locations:

All submissions received by 4 p.m. on Friday, 23 October 2009, by either planning authority and addressed as set out above will be taken into consideration before the making of the plan.

A report with recommendations on all valid submissions or observations received will be prepared and presented to the Members of Sligo and Mayo County Councils for their consideration.
