The Planning Section of Sligo County Council is responsible for implementing the provisions of the Planning and Development Acts 2000-2010 and the Planning Regulations 2001-2010.

This involves:

  • preparation and review of development plans – function performed by the Development Planning Unit.  View the Development Plans
  • consideration of development proposals/planning applications – function performed by the Development Management Section.  Making a Planning Application
  • enforcement of planning legislation – function performed by the Enforcement Section

The Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government (www.environ.ie) publishes a series of leaflets on all aspects of the planning system. They cover a whole range of issues including how to make a planning application, lodge an appeal, requirements for change of use, building an extension to your home, in a word – everything you need to know but didn't know who to ask. Please note that the Department has not updated the information in the leaflets since 2002 and whilst they are still relevant and informative, you are advised to check any point of importance with the Planning Department, who will be able to advise if any significant change has occurred since their publication.

These leaflets are available free of charge from the County Council’s Planning Section. You can download them in PDF format free of charge from the Downloads section
