National Car Test

The National Car Test (NCT) was introduced in Ireland on 4th January 2000.

What are the benefits of car testing?

What cars must be tested?

Testing will be phased in over the period 2000 to 2002 as follows:

  • Cars first registered before 1 January 1992-2000
  • 1992 to 1996 registered cars - 2001
  • 4 year old cars and all liable older cars - 2002

In the relevant year, the NCT will be due on the anniversary of the first registration date (ie day / month / year in Ireland or abroad - whichever is earliest) and subsequent tests every 2 years.

Where can I get my car tested?

NCT centres are located throughout the country including a centre in Sligo.

How much will the NCT cost?

The fee for an NCT will be €49.00 with a retest cost of €27.50, (both inclusive of VAT). Retests which do not require the use of a test lane will be free of charge. Free retests will cover minor items such as the replacement of brake light bulbs or windscreen wipers.
