Motor Tax can be renewed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week online on - http://www.motortax.ie

Types of Vehicle that can be Taxed Online

  1. Private cars
  2. Motorcycles
  3. Vintage or veteran vehicles
  4. Agricultural Tractors, Excavators/Diggers, and Combine Harvesters
  5. Vehicles adapted for use by people with disabilities
  6. Motor caravans (not for first taxing)
  7. Hearses

If your vehicle type is not listed above, you must apply for tax by post or in person. This includes:

  • Goods Vehicles
  • Taxis and Hackneys
  • Buses and school buses

In addition to the above, you can use the online service to

  • apply for a Statutory Off Road Declaration (SORD)(RF150) prior to your tax disc expiring.

What do I need to tax my vehicle online?

  • Vehicle Registration Number
  • Personal Identification Number (PIN)
  • Email address
  • Vehicle Insurance Details
  • Credit / Debit Card Details

What is my PIN?

  • Get your PIN 
  • Last six digits of your Vehicle Registration Certificate Number (VRC) which appears at the top right hand corner on the front of the VRC and begins with the letter C.  That PIN will remain for the vehicle unless its ownership is changed or application for a replacement VRC is made, in which case a new VRC is processed, and a new PIN created.
  • Last six characters of my vehicle's chassis number (VIN) for first time taxing of a brand new or imported vehicle
  • Your PIN is included in your renewal notice which is posted or emailed to you in the month of the tax expiry in the month of tax expiry

NOTE:  If you are not receiving your motor tax reminder in the post, then you are probably being sent the reminder by email as paper reminders are no longer being issued when you have previously taxed your vehicle online.  If you do not wish to receive the email reminder in future, there is an ‘unsubscribe’ link at the bottom of the email which will revert the reminders to paper format

Renewing online

Renewing your motor tax online is straightforward.  The process is broken down into a series of easy to understand steps.  After you logon to www.motortax.ie and enter your vehicle registration number and PIN, you will be asked to:

  • Confirm details of your vehicle - they will be displayed on the screen for you
  • Confirm your name and address - again, these will be shown on screen but they can be changed if necessary
  • Enter your vehicle insurance details
  • Select the period of taxation
  • Enter your card details for payment
  • Your motor tax disc will be posted to you within five working days. You can track the issue of your disc by clicking on the "Track Disc Issue" link on the homepage motortax.ie
