Driving Test

Driving Test applications are processed through the Driver Testing Section, Department of Transport, Government Buildings, Ballina, Co Mayo. In order to take a test, you must be normally resident in Ireland and have an Irish correspondence address. Normal residence is taken to be the place where the person usually lives, that is for at least 185 days in each calendar year.

In order to apply on line, you must have:

  • a valid credit card. The cards currently accepted are Visa & MasterCard.
  • a valid email address.

Your application will normally be acknowledged by post within 5 days. If you do not receive an acknowledgement of your application within 10 days, please contact:

You may also contact the Department by telephone, for the cost of a local call, by dialling 1890 40 60 40. Note that the rates charged for the use of 1890 (LoCall) numbers may vary among different service providers.

What is the Purpose of Your Driving Test?
The driving test is designed to establish whether you:

  • Know the Rules of the Road
  • Have the knowledge and skill to drive competently in accordance with those rules
  • Drive with due regard for the safety and convenience of other road users

Preparing for Your Driving Test

You should:

  • study carefully the Rules of the Road booklet
  • seek the assistance of a good driving instructor
  • practise driving as much as possible on all types of road and in all types of traffic situations, including driving at night build up your driving experience and confidence before applying for your test
