Taxing of Private Car

The requirements to tax a Motor Cycle are the same as to tax a Private Vehicle

Disabled Drivers

NB:  If your tax has lapsed for a month or more you are required to pay arrears in addition to the appropriate rate of duty (see CO2 based rates or see rates based on engine size).  Please contact the Motor Tax Office, if arrears are due for details of the amount payable.

Taxing of a Goods Vehicle

Heavy Goods Vehicle - i.e. unladen weight over 3,500 kgs

  • Application form fully completed and signed
  • Certificate of Roadworthiness (CRW) - due once all goods vehicles are over 1 year old.  If you do not have a current CRW you must submit a Pass Statement from an authorised tester with a fee of €13 to obtain a CRW.  See Authorised testers.
  • Printed weight docket for new and first taxing of imported heavy goods vehicles
  • Correct fee plus €13 for CRW if applicable – see list of rates. Payment may be made by cheque, made payable to Sligo County Council, cash or credit card. Do not send cash in the post.
Light Goods Vehicle - i.e. unladen weight 3,500 kgs or less 

  • If under 1,524 kgs, needs Goods Only declaration, signed and stamped by Gardaí for first time taking in your name
  • Application form fully completed and signed
  • Certificate of Roadworthiness (CRW). If you do not have a current CRW you must submit a Pass Statement from an authorised tester with a fee of Euro6 to obtain a CRW. See Authorised testers. valid for 1 year only.
  • Printed weight docket for first taxing of imported light goods vehicles
  • Correct fee plus 6Euro for CRW if applicable.  see list of rates. Payment may be made by cheque, made payable to Sligo County Council, cash or credit card. Do not send cash in the post.

Testing of Goods Vehicles

  • Heavy Goods Vehicle – over 3,500 kgs:
    Once this vehicle is over one year old it must be tested for Roadworthiness by one of the garages listed. On production of a Test Centre Pass Statement, this office will then issue a Certificate of Road Worthiness which is valid for one year. The fee for a Certificate of Road Worthiness is Euro13.
  • Light Goods Vehicle –3,500 kgs or less:
    Once this vehicle is over 1 year old it must be tested for Roadworthiness by one of the garages listed. On production of a Test Centre Pass Statement, this office will then issue a Certificate of Road Worthiness which is valid for one year. The fee for a Certificate of Road Worthiness is €6.

Taxing of Buses/LPSV

  • Application form completed and signed
  • LPSV Licence
  • Certificate of Roadworthiness (CRW). If you do not have a current CRW you must submit a Pass Statement from an Authorised tester. with a fee of Euro13 to obtain a CRW.
  • Original insurance certificate which covers you for the carriage of passengers for hire and reward.
  • Correct fee – see list of rates

Taxing of School Buses:

The requirements for taxing a school bus are the same as an LPSV  except that an Article 60 Licence must be submitted in place of item 2 LPSV Licence.

Taxing of Hackney’s/Taxis

  • Application form, fully completed and signed.
  • Log Book or vehicle Licensing Certificate
  • Original current insurance certificate
  • Current Hackney/Taxi Licence, issued by the relevant local authority
  • Fee – annual rate Euro62.Payment may be made by cheque, made payable to Sligo County Council, cash or credit card. Do not send cash in the post.

Taxing of Motor Caravans

  • Appropriate application form
  • Log Book or Vehicle Licensing Certificate
  • Original current insurance certificate
  • Fee – annual rate.  Payment may be made by cheque, made payable to Sligo County Council, cash or credit card. Do not send cash in the post.
  • On the first taxing of a motor caravan since October 1998, it is necessary to have a declaration signed by the registered owner and the motor caravan must be inspected by a representative from the Motor Tax Office. Please ring the Motor Tax Office to make an appointment for inspection.
