Introduction

Sligo County Council administers the Higher Education Grant Scheme on behalf of the Department of Education and Science, for students who intend to pursue undergraduate course in third level courses in Ireland, including Northern Ireland and other E.U. Member States. Students intending to pursue postgraduate courses in Ireland and Northern Ireland, but excluding other E.U. Member States may also be eligible for funding subject to the terms and conditions of the Scheme.

What do I need to apply?

Application Forms and Higher Education Grant Scheme may be obtained from Sligo County Council. Application forms are generally available each year in June/July. The closing date for receipt of applications for this year is 31st August, 2009. The VEC deal with applications for P.L.C., Higher Certificate and Ordinary Degree Courses. Sligo County Council deal with applications for Honours Degree and Postgraduate courses.

Documents Required in support of application Application Form must be fully completed and signed Applicants Birth Cert.

If Parents are Self Employed/Farming

Full set of accounts for the year ending 31st December, 2008. Full Notice of Assessment from the Revenue Commissioners.

If Parents are in the PAYE Sector

P60 for year ended 31st December 2008.
P21 Balancing Statement from relevant Inspector of Taxes for the tax year ended 31st December, 2008.
If both parents are working you will require P60’s for both.

If Parents are in receipt of Social Welfare:

A Letter from Social Welfare certifying amount received for the year tax year ending 31st December, 2008 (Note: Children’s Allowance not taken into account.)

Persons to whom this Scheme applies:

Candidates who are entering an approved course for the first time in 2009/2010 academic year.

Mature candidates, who in 2009/2010 academic year, are:
re-entering in order to complete an approved course at undergraduate level for the first time, or  re-entering in order to pursue or complete an approved course at postgraduate level for the first time or · mature students who already hold a postgraduate qualification and are re-entering to progress to a further postgraduate course at a higher level and which represents progression from the level at which the previous postgraduate qualification(s) was attained

Candidates, who having attended but not successfully completed an approved course, are returning following a break of at least five years in order to pursue an approved course at the same level (i.e. Second Chance Students)
